William GUYMON, father of Isaiah GUYMON ???
This page contains information about a William GUYMON,
the possible father of Isaiah GUYMON. Isaiah GUYMON is the first
GUYMON that we know about that was born in the 'New World'.
"William Guymon hired onto a ship coming to Norfolk
in Virginia and met Elizabeth Curry the daughter of
Antoine and Nicole Tonnelier Curry. Elizabeth was
Christened: 16 March 1722 in Ardennes, Bay, France.
William died on the ship before reaching America and
was buried at Sea. Elizabeth was already pregnant
with Isaiah Guymon who was born either in Virginia
or Stokes County, NC in 1753."
The information quoted above came from a
website (Ken Stone's)
I discovered one day.
Assuming an age of 22 when Isaiah was born, William could have been born about 1731.
If we could find either William or Elizabeth on a ships list,
we might be able to determine where they originally started their trip to
the New World.
Since there were GUYMON families in France, based on an established
Guymon Coat of Arms, and if Elizabeth was Christened in France,
there is the possibility that they both came from France. The truth is,
that we may never know the true story of the GUYMON beginnings.
One reason that William Guymon might not show up on a Passenger
List, would be that he was a crewman, and not a passenger.
Perhaps there are separate Crew Lists that we could find to prove
I have not found Elizabeth Curry on any Passenger list as
of yet, but I'll keep looking. Perhaps we should also look
for her parents. It is possible they traveled as a family,
and her name was not listed. Has anyone else found references to a CURRY family in France at this time?
Now, I am also assuming, that since they met aboard ship, and
William died during the three month journey, that the Ship's
Captain performed a marriage ceremony at sea. Maybe there are
records for marriages at sea that we could find.
I have no proof, or corroboration of the above information. If someone can cite references for this information, I would appreciate
that information being mailed to me. I'll be glad to post them here for all to share. For now, it is placed here for speculation only.
